Privacy Commissioner's Guidelines On The Use Of CCTV

In October 2009 the Privacy Commissioner released guidelines outlining the obligations of businesses when using CCTV in areas where the public have access. If businesses fail to meet the requirements of the Privacy Act, the consequences can be serious.

The guidelines cover:
  • Undertaking an evaluation to determine if CCTV is required.
  • Preparing a business plan for the integration of CCTV into a security design.
  • Choosing the most appropriate CCTV equipment.
  • Collection Notices.
  • Complying with the Privacy Act collection principles.
  • The appropriate use of CCTV images.
  • Storage and Retention requirements.
  • The rules relating to dissemination of recorded images.
  • The requirements relating to auditing and ongoing evaluation of CCTV systems.

Security Risk Management can assist organisations to develop proprietary policies and procedures, to ensure compliance with the Privacy Act 1993.
