Privacy Commissioner's Guidelines On The Use Of CCTV


In October 2009 the Privacy Commissioner released guidelines outlining the obligations of businesses when using CCTV in areas where the public have access. If businesses fail to meet the requirements of the Privacy Act, the consequences can be serious.

  • Preparing a business plan for the integration of CCTV into a security design.
  • Choosing the most appropriate CCTV equipment.
  • Collection Notices.
  • Complying with the Privacy Act collection principles.
  • The appropriate use of CCTV images.
  • Storage and Retention requirements.
  • The rules relating to dissemination of recorded images.
  • The requirements relating to auditing and ongoing evaluation of CCTV systems.
